The Department of Work and Pension (DWP) are currently unable to provide us with information about tenants receiving Universal Credit. If the information could be shared with us we would be able to assess your situation and provide the right types of advice, support or assistance in relation to managing your financial affairs. The information that DWP propose to share with your landlord is so we can identifying any tenant who has made a claim for Universal Credit (UC) with housing costs or is receiving UC with a housing cost element.
You have the opportunity to let the DWP know if you think it is a good idea or not, and if you think it would help us, to have more information so that we can put the right support in place.

The England Illegal Money Lending Team (IMLT) is a project set up to prosecute loan sharks and help any victims. Working in partnership with local Trading Standards departments around the country, the IMLT works to rid communities of these illegal and unscrupulous lenders. The team has launched a quick, on-line quiz to warn the public about loan sharks. Everyone who takes part will be entered into a free prize draw to win £100 worth of shopping vouchers, with two runners up receiving goody-bags.

We are part of The Southend Partnership and are delighted to hear that Southend has been awarded a £40 million grant from the Big Lottery Fund. Over the next ten years the funding will help to improve the lives of 13,000 vulnerable babies and children in the town and particularly in the Kursaal Ward, where the Centre Place Family Centre is located.

On Thursday 22nd May, we held our ‘In Touch Thursday’ event, where staff who are normally office based. got the opportunity to visit residents across the County and East London. Residents were delighted to meet staff face to face and to be able to comment on our performance across a range of services

Southend-on-Sea Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) will next week be out and about helping people to cut hundreds of pounds from their energy bills as part of Big Energy Saving Week.
As the rising cost of living continues to put pressure on household budgets, Southend CAB is offering free advice to help consumers save energy, cut their bills and get all the support they are entitled to.
Big Energy Saving Week is a national campaign running from 27th to 31st January. Run by Citizens Advice and supported by other charities, the Government and the energy industry to help consumers check they are on the best deal, switch tariff or supplier and take up help to insulate their homes and reduce their energy usage.
We are holding an open meeting at Centre Place Family Centre, Prospect close, Southend, SS1 2JD, on the 21st of January 6pm-7pm so you can be a part of the event.
Anyone is welcome to come to the meeting, Children welcome, tea/coffee and cakes will be served. Here you can learn more about the event and how to get involved in the Community Event 2014.

‘Stop the Hate’ initiative has been launched by Essex Police and Partnership Agencies as part of a concerted effort to find new ways to tackle hate crime in Essex.
The theme is ‘Report it to Sort it’ and emphasises on encouraging people to tell police if they have been a victim of hate crime, whether it be based on race, religion, sexual orientation, transgender identity or disability. Click here for more information >>

Staff working at Estuary recently attended the Odeon Cinema in Southend-on-Sea to watch a short film and hear more from Paul Durkin, Chief Executive about the Association’s new core values. This innovative launch is the start of a new chapter for us, we have had a very successful past few years, achieving considerable growth.
Previously, our values formed quite a lengthy list, but the new revised values of Excellence, Care and Innovation, are much more memorable and will have a greater influence on the way the organisation operates. Our ‘old’ values are still relevant and worthy, but the Board and Executive Team believe that our three new values condense these into something stronger and that they will exert a higher impact on our behaviours and services.
“There is no doubt in my mind that by truly "living" these values we will be able to deliver excellent services that represent good value for money for our residents and this is a fundamental aim for Estuary. This is the next, very big step in further developing the customer focus culture of Estuary so that we can be a GREAT organisation.” Paul Durkin, Chief Executive.

Alan Gershlick, a Board Member recently retired after 9 years’ service. To mark his retirement and the wonderful work Alan has been doing to raise money for the communities we work in we created The Alan Gershlick Wall of Support.
Supporters of the Association were invited to sponsor a plaque on the wall bearing their company name and logo. Donations from the sponsors will be used to fund equipment and services for the people living on the Woodgrange Drive Estate in Southend-on-Sea. Service users who used to live at Sandy Lodge in Shoeburyness, a Registered Care Home, have moved into a wonderful refurbished home in Kingswood Chase, Leigh on Sea, which is a Supported Living service with 24 hour support.
We have a responsibility to protect our staff from incidents of violence,
threatening behaviour and verbal abuse as well as, safeguard client confidentiality.
From 1 August 2013, our staff will use devices supplied by Connexion2 (Lone Worker Security)
which will monitor and record incidents where staff feel their safety is threatened. Evidence, including video or audio recordings, obtained through these devices may be used in criminal and civil proceedings and/or to take local sanctions against alleged offenders.
